"A few questions before you leave, sir. Do you have barracks lodgings or are we on our own for rooms here at the inn? Are there any seaside cliffs or cave systems nearby? The group we eliminated for Sesolston was based in a cave right outside of town, anything like that around here? And any cargo we find on a ship is the property of the merchants, what about any property that has been relocated by an organized band to another location that we may be required to clean out?"

"Fairly-posed," replies Commander Sean. "For your lodgings we have several inns around town, though this one is the most frequented by travellers. They offer a more or less typical service for a typical price. The amount the mayor is offering you includes reimbursement for these expenses."

His eyebrows arch slightly at the mention of the Sesolston raiding party. "I'm surprised that a raiding party had actually set up camp in a permanent location. Normally our typical enemies stay in temporary camps throughout the wildernesses of the kingdom. I suppose that the mobility they thus gain is the main reason why they have survived for so long up to this day to continue causing our towns problems. But from what you say, it sounds as though the raiders near Sesolston were far more organized than the typical events these towns deal with. There are some seaside cliffs and coves along the shore of the peninsula as its stretches out into the sea, but you won't really be finding those here, closer to town or off the town shoreline.

"The kind of cargo we're discussing should be marked by the traders they come from and the merchants they are going to. These kinds of marks can easily resist normal wear and tear, and usually cannot be removed without intentional force. It is mainly the dry goods of higher value that we are interested in if indeed any are left - other kinds of goods, particularly foodstuffs, have most likely perished already. If you decide to take some of the cargo with you, please bring it back so that we can properly identify it. Some of the merchants have nulled their shipments, so if it is verified that they no longer are interested in it, it will be yours to keep."

Logistics and payments could be handled by the more learned of the group. The group becomes much less menacing, though still fearsome indeed, as the largest stands and gives a nod to the commander. Krytox pays his tab quietly, very aware of the few locals who never stopped eyeing them. As their stare burns holes through his dark scales, he tries to learn a bit of the town from the bar keep.

"Speak Underlost?" he asks up front and likely in vain. "No matter," he continues in broken Common, "Is there a Temple of the Blackblade here?" Krytox tries to look as unmenacing as possible, yet he still towers over the man. His stance and expression indicates that he means well, but this isn't Dark Star and the 'keep is obviously no Underlost.

The look in the barkeep's eyes isn't fear, but it is a slight curiosity mixed with nervousness. The thick-armed, balding man averts his gaze while rubbing his chin with a hairy hand, shaking his head slowly.

"Nay, not that I be hearin' of, scaled stranger. I says ye won't be findin' an actual stone n' steel foundation of any kind fer yer patron this far up-Shell. If ye be wantin' te talk Underlost wit' somebody, ye mighte' wanna be seein' historians an' loremasters in the 'Soldier City.' Still, if ye be seein' 'bout worshippin' yer patron, the town guard don't really be carin' about that, unless it be includin' any... unbeneficial activity like ritual sacrifice and the like..." Almost as an afterthought, the barkeep thinks to add a smirk to his poor joke. But it's clear to Krytox, who experienced plenty of colonial interaction in his day, that prejudices will always be prejudices. Not that the lizard could blame these people. Dark Star was by no means the most pleasant place in the world.

ooc: The 'Soldier City' is Siegard, the capital of the Kingdom of Somi and residence of the Somi royal family. They are approximately three weeks' travel north from Sesolston.

Like an ominous black cloud, night rolls quickly over the port town of Seawell. The adventurers book two rooms with the clerk and stable space for the Alterith's mount. He and Rasa share one, and Skythar and Krytox take the other. Unequipping themselves to gain the advantage of soft beds that surprisingly do not yield to the reptilian's scaly, spined bodies, with their weapons, armor and equipment lying very closeby, they drift off into a restful sleep, unencumbered by the trappings of their new profession.

ooc: 1 gp per night from each character for lodging, and a one time 5 sp fee for stabling.

* * *

Morning comes slowly, and with it, the late summer heat that seems to radiate hot dampness. At the same time, a breeze from the sea seems to keep the temperature under control, so that the effect is something like experiencing a heat lamp nearby while standing in an air-conditioned room. After the group grabs their equipment and checks out of the inn, they wander around town gathering information. Among the various commoners and militiamen they talk to, they learn the following.

Any (or all) of you can (each) spend 2 gp to make a Knowledge (appropriate to what you want to know) or Intelligence check for any one of the following points of information to learn more details about that point.

  • The local savage tribes consist mainly of reptilians. Until now, they have always pestered Seawell and the surrounding area, but recently their activity has increased and become more emboldened.
  • A lighthouse was built many years ago near the tip of the peninsula to help incoming trade ships avoid the dangerous reef that begins near the shoreline along the deeper waters farther out.
  • Fishermen regularly take their ships out around the peninsula for their best catches. At night, they row their ships to shallower water (avoiding the reef) and set anchor near small seaside cliffs off the shore of the peninsula.
  • Because of the wet season in the summer, the peninsula is currently flooded with miles and miles of shallow, murky water, creating a swamp-like environment. Various wild animals and creatures roam the peninsula, drawn to it during this wet season.
  • The family that operates the lighthouse seldom comes back to town for essential supplies, being somewhat self-sufficient. Nevertheless, the town has not yet heard from them for some time.
  • The group can travel to the lighthouse by land, or by sea, via hired transport. The land route takes them through the swampy peninsula, while the sea route takes them all the way down the peninsula and just around its tip to where the lighthouse is.
  • If the group chooses the land route, two types of guides are available to help: The first type is more or less a nature expert who can help guide them through the swamp for a time-based fee. The second type is a seasoned woodsman who can assist them with their tasks (but requires a fixed fee plus a portion of the spoils).
  • If the group chooses the sea route, it will only take a few days to get to the lighthouse. The trek on land will take at least several days, possibly more without any guides.

The city quickly begins to bare down on Alterith, and he grows restless quickly. After learning of the lighthouse, he decides that this is the most promising lead, and it must be inspected, as well as the reef itself. The group could take a small fishing boat out under the cover of darkness and see if anything odd is occurring around the reef that might explain the missing ships. The lighthouse is the starting point, however. After deciding this for himself, it is just a matter of time for the rest of the group to return. In the meantime, Alterith decides to explore the area around the town and find out if the raiding groups that attack the town are closer than the guards and officials realize. These are not his woods, but he has a knack for understanding the ways of the wildlife and in moving well through the wilderness. Letting Rasa know his plans, he offers him a chance to accompany him, while expecting his friend to remain behind. Either way he heads out a couple miles from town with his pig, surveying the area off the main roads, and near the beginnings of the swampland. He watches the flight of birds, and the paths of the dear for any marked signs that humans or even natural predators have invaded this area. Deer tend to travel the well worn paths until a predator crosses the path. Newer paths, would mean that the deer have altered their behavior, and a new path signifies that it was not just one occurrence. The birds would tend to flock away from humans or other large predators, while a camp out here would attract more of the scavengers, ravens and crows for instance. Much can be learned from the simple behavior of animals, and his years of survival in similar terrain has trained Alterith well for just this purpose.

ooc: if you want a roll for one of my skills Jerry, feel free to make it for me, in this case I'd rather not know whether I roll well so I can roleplay it out better. Thx.

Krytox looks a bit downtrodden after hearing there is no temple. Of course, paying allegiance is one thing, but your own strength is what you make. He gives a crooked grin to the barkeep and continues with a menial conversation before retiring for the night.

* * *

He wakes just before dawn and readies himself for a long day. Knowing the rest of the group fairly well at this point, he knows that if they slept, it wasn't for long and they were likely ahead of him in their activities already. A rumble from his stomach tell him that the food at the establishments around Seawell will not be sufficient, so he heads a short ways out of town. Though the territory is unfamiliar to him, the scenario is not, and after only a short time has passed he has satiated his hunger with a few of the smaller native creatures.

After his small, yet satisfying breakfast, he returns to town and tries to glean any information he can of the surrounding area. Learning of the lighthouse and the surrounding swamp, it seems to the Underlost that this may be a prime area for an ambush as commoners would not likely be prepared for battle in such an area. Krytox attempts to meet back up with the others to see if they have found anything useful.

Rasa sits in silence during the party's bar excursion. He doesn't even appear to pay attention, let alone care about what the commander had to say to them all before he went to bed. Though he was listening intently.

After a nice long night, he wakes up early and carefully writes a letter to his friend in a code that only the two shared. It has been a while, and he figured he'd catch up as best he can on all of the adventures he had gone through thus far. Finishing just as Alterith is ready to go, Rasa turns down his offer. He knew quite well that the halfling new his answer before he asked.... He just is trying to be nice, Rasa supposes. He has other plans, after all.

He goes into town and sends his friend Erron his letter, and then proceeds to question about the paths. not only was he interested in finding the cheapest route, but the best route. He thinks that the shoreline might be the best, so he questions into the fishing establishment more...

Rasa is questioning into the third dot, asking fishermen about anything out of the ordinary they may have seen on shore during their trips. He also asks about safety issues concerning passage to the lighthouse, and any other details about the sea route to the lighthouse.

Chapter 2: A Shining Pillar of Deception - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: #9   Chapter 2: A Shining Pillar of Deception - Page 2 EmptyThu Jul 24, 2008 2:55 pm

I’m assuming no one wishes to conceal the information they discover. Therefore, the information gathered (heh heh) from all roll results are collectively addressed. Andrew, because of the layout of the region, the fishermen wouldn’t know if anything unusually had happened to the lighthouse itself. However, because this was obviously just a misunderstanding due to lack of visual, I’ll focus your inquiry more on the paths.

The group learns the following details regarding their inquiries.

The lighthouse was built 45 years ago by the Kojars, a family of four. Their home is built directly inside the structure, on its lower levels. The lighthouse is over fifty feet tall, and rests on the other side of the peninsula just around its tip, away from Seawell.

It is apparent from searching around town and explanations by locals that whatever telltale signs of habitation that would normally be left by larger, clumsier groups such as orc and other goblinoid tribes are nowhere to be seen. The current conclusion is thus that the savage tribes inhabiting this part of the region are very familiar with the lay of the land, and probably divide up their tribal groups into smaller bands and raiding parties to avoid being tracked effectively.
When a dry season begins, as the swamp waters begin to recede from the peninsula, local wildlife dig muddy depressions in the ground to trap the remaining water and keep themselves comfortable as they await the next wet season. Known as solution holes, these deep pits measure 20 feet across and house all sorts of wildlife: Fish, turtles, snakes, birds, and even alligators, among others. Since it is currently the wet season, the solution holes have shrunk, collapsing slightly, though they are not visible above the murky water and tall grasses that dot the land.

The peninsula is also dotted with stands of trees growing on raised areas known as hummocks. A typical hummock measures about 300 feet across, but can be up to a few times larger. Trees grow thickly on the hummocks, providing shelter for large predators such as wild cats.

The terrain around the lighthouse itself consists mainly of sand dunes dotted with patches of tall grass and trees. The dunes form a raised area between the beach and the swampland, which shields the beach from the view of anyone approaching from the peninsula.

Overland, the journey would take approximately five days due to the marsh-like nature of the peninsula without any help. For the price of 1 sp per day (4 sp total), the adventurers can hire a nature guide to take them through the peninsula to the lighthouse in four days (the guide is a low-level expert who does not participate in encounters). For an initial one-time fee of 10 gp and a 10% share of all spoils attained, the adventurers can hire a woodsman (low-level ranger) who would provide the same service while also assisting them with encounters.

By sea, two full days by large sailing ship is all that is necessary to round the peninsula and set down near the lighthouse. For such transport, the group would need to pay 50 gp per day, for a total of 100 gp. During the night, the ship would set anchor near the shore (avoiding sections of the shallower waters lined with the reef). Such a ship costs approximately 10,000 gp to purchase, but requires a minimum crew of 20. The group could obtain two rowboats with oars (less than 150 gp), but the trip would then take nearly as long as the land journey (in addition, they risk running into the reef that is in the vicinity of the lighthouse due to their inexperience). Because of the dangerous reef around that area of the peninsula’s tip, the fishermen stay on the Seawell side, where the swampy peninsula terminates into either a sandy shoreline dotted with tall, thick grasses before meeting the water’s edge, or small cliffs occasionally speckled with coves into which fishermen often take their ships at night.

Traveling by water in theory bypasses almost all of the overland dangers and longer hike time, but the ships would have to anchor a few miles away from the lighthouse in order to avoid the reef there. The adventurers would then have to disembark and trek the remaining the remaining few miles to investigate the lighthouse.

In summary, for travel, there are the following options:

  1. Overland: No fees, 5 days.
  2. Overland with guide: 4 sp, 4 days.
  3. Overland with ally: 5 gp +10% spoils, 4 days (helps with encounters).
  4. Oversea by transport: 100 gp, 2 days.
  5. Oversea: What are you, Superman?

Please vote in OOC, or state your intention to abstain. Along with your vote, add a Diplomacy (or Charisma) check. This will be used to resolve ties/differences. Thanks!

ooc: Total fee there and back is 8 sp. Each of you, please deduct 2 sp from your inventory. Thanks.

Hiring a Seawell local to guide them into the swamp, the group spends the rest of the day preparing for their trip. The following morning at dawn, Armias, the rugged-looking guide, meets them at the entrance of the tavern, toting only a small pack of essential supplies and a walking staff. The group offers the silver on the spot, but Armias casually waves it away.

"We'll figure out the cost later, depending on how long it actually takes us." Seeing Alterith striding up astride his pig, Armias gives a tiny whistle. "Might not wanna bring that along, halfling," he cautions. "It's gonna slow us down, besides, it'll probably get lost on the way. No, I'm not doubting how well you've trained it. I'm saying, it'll probably get lost on the way, know what I mean? But eh, us taking longer won't hurt my purse any." Armias smirks and leans on his walking staff. Either way, he makes no further suggestions, and whether or not his advice is heeded, they head out several minutes after the group has gathered, stopping by the eastern border of town where the adventurers first entered Seawell. Armias hails one of the overnight guardsmen. "Hail, Stiphen! Any trogs join you guys for breakfast?" The guardsmen named Stiphen laughs from his watch tower.

"Hardly, Armi! Things've been mighty quiet this time of day! Shell's hells, the savages are probably still sleeping. If we knew where they were camping we'd go and make shish-kabobs outta them now!" After exchanging laughs, the groups depart with the guardsmens' wishes for speed and safety.

The first four hours of the journey pass with no incident, the five trekking through the swampy land amid the buzzing of insects, and various wild birds and small critters. The group pauses for a meal, stopping at a small hummock of trees, with the adventurers munching on their rations as Armias gathers his supplies and the resources in the environment around him to somehow concoct a bowl of thick stew, which he slurps heartily.

ooc: Survival checks required for those wanting to find and prepare their own food. Failure on the check defaults to automatically consuming your equipped rations, instead. Please note ration consumption on your character sheets, thanks.

The group knows that before long, they will be resuming their trek through the peninsula wetlands.

Alterith immediately sets out to find his own food on the road. He has some travel rations with him, but without his pig to assist him with carrying food, he would prefer to save the rations for harder times where food may be scarcer. Looking for mushrooms and other edible fungi he attempts to put together his own stew, mixing in some of his dried meat for flavor and protein. He doesn't have time to hunt for any fresh meat, but the stew will keep him going for the rest of the day, unless some overly strenuous activity ensues.

Although he ate a sizeable amount at dawn, Krytox' stomach growls audibly by the time the travelers stop for the midday meal. The Underlost is significantly larger than any of the others and undoubtedly requires more food. Not one to forage for mushrooms or berries, he treks a short ways from the hummock and crouches in the murky water. The meditation exercises with the Traveler come to mind and Krytox relaxes his muscles and waits. Catching fish and other wetland creatures is more than familiar, considering his race, though one of Aquatrane descent might scoff at his abilities. A short time passes before he succeeds in procuring some meat for himself. An even shorter time elapses before there are naught but bones and the Underlost is ready for travel once more.

Survival: 15 + 2 = 17

ooc: I figured 17 was probably enough for success. If not, I will adjust the flavor in this post accordingly

As the group settles down for their midday meal, Skythar takes off his armor and pulls out his net. Although unfamiliar with the local flora and fauna, Skythar decides to test his luck at hunting. After all, there must be more here to hunt than in the fiery desert of his home shell. He disappears into the surroundings, his scales shimmering and matching the surrounding colors as he goes. Pretty soon, he is only a a distortion in the background.

As he was so used to the city life, spending 85% of his life in the heart of a giant city on the 6th shell, Rasa was hardly used to the wilderness at this point. while he did live in a cave with Alterith recently, Alterith did most of the hunting. nonetheless, he at least knew how to work a fishing rod. He brought plenty of rations, so if he needed to, he could eat that, but everyone else seems to have their hearts set on getting food, so he might as well kill the time.

yes, i has a fishing hook :) +3 wisdom to survival check:

Alterith leans against a tree munching a piece of bark he found on the ground pretending to heartily enjoy its rough texture and earthy flavor. As the companions get ready to leave, he grabs his supplies and weapons and jumps up ready to move on.

Guys, thanks for using the Dice function. However, because it generates these automatic posts (and I find it annoying), I'm going to say just use the "rand" function from now on if you want to do online rolls. [ rand](value you want to use)[/rand]. Thanks.

The adventurers eat their fill in the marshy swamp-like land. Despite their relative lack of skill, there is plenty on the menu in these parts, and no one has any trouble finding what they seek and chowing down. A few hours of travel afterward is cause for some passive relief - no one appears to have been poisoned by their food.

The rest of the hot, murky day passes without incident. Dusk approaches as the group trudges on. The guide expresses that it would be suitable for them to find shelter in a hummock. They travel a bit farther, and see one up ahead. As they near it, the guide suddenly freezes, board stiff. His eyes are wide with a sudden alertness, and a single drop of sweat trickles from his forehead, down to the tip of his nose, which doesn't even twitch. He holds out his outstretched palm slightly from his side, signaling for all of them to stop immediately.

Before he can whisper to them, a low, rumbling growl issues from the dark clump of trees and bushes. Barely noticeable at the foot of the trees on the hammock are the shapes of two large beasts.

Alterith knows he is the first on the menu for these new creatures, but he listens to the growls and seeks to identify what the creatures are in the trees, and tries to remember if he has had any experience handling similar types of creatures before. Leaving his axe at his side, he attempts to identify the dominant creature and persuade it that he, Alterith is the new king of this land, and that these creatures eat only what he leaves for them.

Rasa instinctively draws out his crossbow, readying it for a shot. He leans over to the guide and whispers "what are we up against? and do you know any weaknesses?" while keeping his eye on the bushes. If anything jumps out at all, it was getting a bolt in the face. Rasa really hated the wilderness before this, and now he hates it even more.... HE was the predator, not some stupid mindless animal.

Readying crossbow for immediate shot. also, let me know whatever mr. squishyguide has to say.

Krytox stops in his tracks, moments after the guide, and stares in the area where the guide is looking. His eyes focus easily enough on the two beasts on the hummock ahead, but he cannot immediately identify what they are. Seeing the guide is now a pale, ashen color, Krytox knows there is something to fear - at least for an everyday wilderness guide. His hand slowly and carefully reaches for his new play thing, but his training has lead him to take a path of caution, despite his physical prowess. As such, he lowers his head and quietly whispers to the guide.

"What are creatures? Looks big," he says, simply. Ready at a moment's notice, he steps slightly in front of the guide, for where would they be without him except a few silver richer.

Wisdom: 2 + 1 = 3

ooc: wisdom roll to determine if I have any knowledge/insight on the creatures... and nope.

Everyone tenses as the low growls continue. Alterith tries to subdue these hummock-lurking creatures with a visual display of power. The guide is clearly shocked and frustrated, but maintains a completely deadpan, neutral voice so as to not stir up the growling beasts further. "Stop that. Damn fool halfling, what in Shell's hells are you doing? You're going to get us killed." His eyes slowly turn to glance at each of the others. "Jungle panthers. Hungry ones, at that. But there's enough of us that they'd rather stay in the hummock. We're going to go around. Very very slooooowwwwlllyyyyy..."

The guide begins sliding his feet through the shallow mucky ground, his boots sploshing softly, intending to circle the hummock in a wide radius, giving the panthers plenty of room. Despite his scared expression, like a professional, he calmly, slowly gestures to the group to follow suit. "Don't any of you show your teeth. If you insist on talking, keep your lips over your teeth." He gives Skythar and Krytox a sideways glance.

"Especially you two."

ooc: The panthers are not moving from the hummock, though their growling heads turn slowly to trail the group as they move (assuming you all move with the guide). For those of you following to the guide's lead, make the following checks: Charisma, Diplomacy, and Move Silently.

Krytox, while not scared, follows the lead of the guide. He knows it is unwise to get in a battle with these animals when they should save their strength for potentially more pressing needs later on. The four companions might be able to take on these two, but at what cost? They would be fighting on the panthers' home turf giving them a significant disadvantage. As he makes his way behind the guide, his foot sinks deep into the dark muck. Now with one leg knee deep in the swamp a sense of urgency overtakes him, and Krytox has a momentary lapse regarding the quiet aspect of their detour. He splashes slightly as he braces his other leg on a more solid part of the swamp floor. With a large heave and a small splash his leg begins to pull free. SSSPPLLLLLOOOORRRRRRRSSSSHHHHH!!!! A large sucking sound reverberates through the area as water, muck and air battle to fill the void left by the tree-trunk of a leg.

"Oops," Krytox murmurs, looking sheepishly at the others.

Charisma: 11 + 0 = 11
Diplomacy: 20 + 0 = 20
Move Silently: 1 + 3 = 4

ooc: Can I get an environment bonus to my move "silently" roll. haha, sorry guys...

Staying between the group and the Panthers, Alterith agrees with the guide. These beasts won't be intimidated and they won't buy into him being the leader of the pack. Bears and members of the canine family are much easier to sway. Cats are unpredictable and selfish at best. Using his axe as a shield he makes sure to prevent light from flashing off it and attracting the cat's attention, but he makes sure they see the steel and know that this prey is not going down easily. Even hungry cats and find better food in a place such as this. He keeps his stray hand on a hunk of dried meat, if worst comes to worst he can throw it at the cats and perhaps discourage the effort it takes to attack.

Rasa agrees with the guide..... there is no reason to engage these creatures if they don't have to. completely unphased by the potential attackers, he continues to follow the group. he keeps his bow ready, however, because while he doesn't care to bother the panthers, if they care to bother him, they're in for a rude awakening.....

and the number 1 reason why i use dice, is i'm lucky. i rolled 3 seperate d20's, and got the following:

Charisma: 18

Diplomacy: 19

Move silently: 15 + 8 = 23

Rasa continues moving through the swamp, basically making no sound at all. He gives a glare to Krytox at the sound of the large slush, but honestly, he knew someone would do it regardlessly. In fact, he honestly expected the halfling......

The group splashes their way around the hummock, giving the panthers a wide berth. As they circle around the growling creatures, they notice smaller pairs of semi-glowing eyes appearing at the feet of the panthers and matching their larger, higher ones. The group surmises that thankfully, the panthers have had their fill of meat for the day, and are simply watching over their cubs.

You happen upon a second hummock farther down the peninsula. The starry nighttime sky is filled with dark, amorphous "holes" - continental landmasses of the sister Shells above Miderth, floating like silent guardians over the heads of mortal Miderthians. Searching through the trees and underbrush, the group finds no threatening creatures and decides to set up camp for the evening meal and spending the night.

ooc: Let me know what you plan on doing for your dinner (if using rations be sure to mark off your supplies as necessary on your sheet) and make rolls accordingly. Also, let me know what you all will be doing for the night shifts that will be occurring from 10pm to 8am. Remember that standard characters require 8 hours of rest without armor to be at full capability the following day, so be sure to indicate if you are keeping your armor on or taking it off for the night. Thanks

This is the life. A wide open sky, a few companions, and nobody to tell you what to do or not do. Cities are definitely not the most comfortable place to be. Well, nothing for it, dinner will come the same way lunch did. A nice stew with some mushrooms and roots. Maybe a carrot or two and a potatoe for substance. If some meat can be caught in this marshland it'll add some flavor, otherwise a few strips of dried beef will add the protein his body needs. As the stew settles he offers it to the others if they are interested.

"I'll be keepin' me eyes open fer the first couple hours. Get yer rest while ye can, I'll wake whoever wants the second watch."
